Ryan Giggs will complete a 23rd season at Manchester United after signing a new one-year contract at Old Trafford.
Giggs, will now remain with his only club until the end of next season.
The 39-year-old was widely expected to announce his retirement when his current deal ends in the summer, but after proving to be a key player in the last few weeks, Giggs has had his stay extended.
The Welshman, a scorer in every Premier League season, has got five goals in 22 matches this term and with his experience proving as valuable as ever, Sir Alex Ferguson was delighted to have signed him up for another campaign.
‘What can I say about Ryan that hasn’t already been said? He is a marvellous player and an exceptional human being,’ said Ferguson.
‘Ryan is an example to us all, the way in which he has, and continues to, look after himself.
‘His form this year shows his ability and his enjoyment of the game are as strong as ever and I am absolutely delighted that he has signed a new contract.’
Giggs was equally delighted to have signed up, and is targeting more trophies in the next 18 months.
‘I am feeling good, enjoying my football more than ever and, most importantly, I feel I am making a contribution to the team,’ said Giggs.
‘This is an exciting team to be part of, with great team spirit, and we are again pushing for trophies as we head towards the business end of the season.
‘I am delighted to have signed a new contract. I would like to thank Sir Alex and the coaching staff and I would also like to thank David Gill who has been a tremendous support over my many years here.
