Romelu Lukaku: I prefer early starts and prayer over ‘devilish’ nightclubs

West Brom’s Romelu Lukaku has revealed his scintillating form is down to shunning the champagne lifestyle of the modern day footballer.
The 19-year-old Belgian has bagged 12 goals in the Premier League already this season, and the on-loan Chelsea striker reckons his strict upbringing has helped him resist the lures of booze and birds in local nightclubs, which is now paying dividends on the pitch.
Speaking on a Belgian TV show, Lukaku said: ‘I am always back at home.
‘I wake up at 8am the first thing I do is a prayer. Then I call my mum to ask if everything is OK.
‘I ask her if she needs anything, then I call my dad. And then I go to training. I finish my training and then go home and call my parents again.
‘Since I was 16, for example, the word “carre” (a nightclub) at home was like something that came from the devil.
‘I still remember when we were national champion with Anderlecht and the next day I had school.
‘I said “Papa, can I go to the disco?” He looked at me like… and I thought “nope!”
‘I want to be successful and to be recognised as a good football player but also as a good person – not as Romelu the guy who leaves the nightclub and sprays champagne over everyone.’
