Papiss Cisse’s stoppage-time winner sent Newcastle through to the Europa League quarter-finals with a 1-0 aggregate win over Anzhi Makhachkala.
The Russian side looked to have forced extra time, despite being reduced to ten men in the 55th minute when Mehdi Carcela-Gonzalez was given a second yellow card in seven minutes.
However, Cisse, who scored a late winner on Sunday against Stoke in the Premier League, headed in Sylvain Marveaux’s peach of a cross to send the Russians crashing out.
Anzhi had nearly gone ahead late on but Mark Boussoufa’s free-kick struck the crossbar.

‘They could not cope with what we had going forward and they gave Papiss a chance and you can’t do that.’
Elsewhere in the Europa League, Tottenham saw off a strong challenge from Inter Milan as they went through thanks to Emmanuel in extra time, while Bucharest3-1 on the night to progress 3-2 on aggregate.
